Luke Tangerine – I Adore You (ft. Carlos Ucedda) (2023)

From the realm of funk, jazz and rock to electronic beats in a dream-pop swirl, musician Luke Tangerine has drifted from live performances to soundtrack compositions and now a new chapter in the world of “retrowave electronic music”. This is my introduction to Tangerine, but he has been turning heads across the globe for many years. From Europe to North America, the “Tangerine tone” has intoxicated listeners with melodic charm. Inspired by acts like Kraftwerk and Jean Michel Jarre, his cinematic melodies have been compared to Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and Pet Shop Boys – a sliver of nostalgic haziness in a swirl of synth-driven sound. Come with me as I delve into his critically acclaimed discography.

Following his well-received single ‘Midlife Crisis.Again’ and album Interstellar Radio, Germany-based Tangerine releases his new single ‘I Adore You’. Combining his talents with those of Spanish singer Carlos Ucedda, ‘I Adore You’ not only transcends space and time but also cultures. An established artist in Spain, Ucedda is known for his soulful voice, emotionally charged melodies and tender charm. From the romanticism of the Spanish soul to the masterful wave of cinematic synths, Tangerine and Ucedda drop us in a spellbinding haze of music.

Similar to previous material, Tangerine’s nostalgic swirl of romantic synth-pop flutters about listeners with a kaleidoscopic shimmer. Wistful and whimsical, you travel through a haunting sonic fog flush with soul-stirring sentimentalities. Hidden beneath the veil of twinkling electronica, the soulful richness of Ucedda both simmers in a harmonic flow and grasps at your ankles with a vulnerable twinge. Bubbling and bold with a sheen of confidence but an intimate intensity fluttering through the sophisticated chasm of sound.

While many people find these ambient soundscapes alluring in their flightiness, Tangerine brings meticulous precision in ‘I Adore You’. The capricious nature of ‘I Adore You’ might appear foolish or fantastic; however, clarity belies the intricate electronic beats making the single amusing and analytical. Either way, it’s a divine skip through a melodic masterpiece. I cannot wait for more from Luke Tangerine.
