Luke Boor – Queens (2023)

I always enjoy discovering new music, whether it be a brand-new artist with a debut single or an established award-winning act with tons of experience behind them – the feeling is the same: awe, joy and a heart-skipping thrill of something new. Today, the thrill belongs to Luke Boor. Hailing from Texas but now living in the home of country music, Nashville, Tennessee, Boor brings a unique brand of indie-pop to our ears; however, his world was not always indie-pop.

From 2009 to 2012 he was a member of pop-punk group Assemble The Skyline performing various gigs and reaching charts like Purevolume’s ‘Top 20 Unsigned Bands’. Not one to give up on his musical passion, Boor embraced a solo career in 2014 with the well-received Skeletons and Take It To Heart. Unfortunately, life took over and Boor disappeared from the scene for almost ten years. Now, he’s back with a new sound and greater enthusiasm. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Queens’.

Following his single ‘Change’, Luke Boor shifts from a toe-tapping, upbeat indie-pop tone to a more experimental sound in ‘Queens’. Flowing in the indie-pop sphere, a tinge of rock matches pop in the single but with distorted obscurity fluttering along the lines of Radiohead. As with most songs, ‘Queens’ began as a stripped-down acoustic guitar and drums with vocals style single…until Boor met Mike Abiuso.

Produced and recorded at Behind The Curtains Media, Abiuso introduced percussion with the distorted Wurlitzer adding an ethereal effect to ‘Queens’, so elegantly capturing the theme of the song. A tale of lost love on the New York subway, the off-kilter veil of guitars and haunting rhythms capture the tragedy while a distant echo of drums represents the beating heart of a lost individual.

In a similar vein to James Blunt’s ‘You’re Beautiful’ as a tale of unrequited love from a distance, ‘Queens’ is heartbreaking with a gut-wrenching pull. Yet, unlike Blunt, Boor has a slight edge in the obscure instrumentation, breathless vocals, and soul-stirring intoxication.
