Lucy Wroe – Heartbeat Wipers (2024)

Sauntering across various flavours of pop, Lucy Wroe is the “pop guru” of the 2020s. A trendsetter and pioneer in new realms of pop, one can never be 100% certain where Wroe will go next, but what is certain is it will be intriguing. The union of singer-songwriter Lucy Wroe and producer Philipp Koerver, the London-based songstress floods cinematic soundscapes with luxurious vocals and decadent but comforting lyrics – all resonating with a relatable personal narrative.

In 2020, we came across Wroe with her debut EP Thoughts On A Dream. Since this introduction, her music has slipped from one side to the next with constant evolution on an outstanding scale. Following her 2023 EP WAVES, Wroe boldly steps into 2024 with ‘Heartbeat Wipers’.

Borne of a combination of a recording of “rhythmic windscreen wipers… layered with a bedroom recording of two looping guitars”, ‘Heartbeat Wipers’ is three-and-a-half minutes of dreamy, ethereal pop meets indie-folk gently caressing your ears. As if you were listening to the rain softly hitting a window, the track is comforting but vulnerability oozes from Wroe’s melancholy vocals.

While ‘Heartbeat Wipers’ is a cinematic swirl of perfumed sonic mist, the lyricism adds profoundness to the track. A tale of heartache, heartbreak and despair, the single tackles the complexity of broken relationships. Wroe explains:

“This song is about being entirely dependent on the person who knew you the most and having to lose that part of you at the end of a relationship. It’s both the releasing of the past and the acceptance that so much of them will always be within you…”

One aspect I find interesting about ‘Heartbeat Wipers’ is not the lyricism (although that in itself is intriguing), it is the execution of the lyrics. Wroe’s vocals are woeful and exude fragility, however warmth and sincerity lurk in the intricate tones.
