Lucy Warr – Rip It Off (2020)

A lot of people wear masks to hide what they are going through or to feel like they fit in. Lucy Warr is encouraging us to all get rid of these masks and stop pretending. Drawing on her own experience with mental health and the impact the current world climate had on her, she lets you know that it is okay to not be okay. Looking to normalise what goes on in our brains, she helps you shed feelings of inadequacy and the imposter syndrome.

Following her debut single, she continues to deliver her infectious pop sound. With melodic acrobatics, she showcases her natural talent for music. Showing no signs of slowing down, she is ready to take on the music industry and find her place on your favourite playlist.

‘Rip It Off’ shimmers to life with twinkling synth tones and a melodic vocal line. This gives way to the almost spoken-word vocals of the verses. There are deep dark synth beats that come through on the verse to highlight the struggle of mental health, particularly in lockdown when the song was written. The pulses of the melody are a wonderful sonic representation of mental health struggles as they smoothly flow only to pop on the chorus for a hard push.

Warr’s vocals are as dynamic as the melody and capture the issues perfectly. The spoken-word verses set the scene as she lays bare what goes on inside our minds. Her higher tone on the chorus helps you find the strength to rip your mask off and let people know how you really feel. The lyrics are relatable and engaging whether you have suffered from mental health problems and imposter syndrome or not.

Lucy Warr takes you on a journey through the stigma of acknowledging what happens in our minds and letting go of the masks we wear in ‘Rip It Off’. The movement of the melody provides a wonderful sonic representation of the ups and downs of struggling with mental health. Her vocals swing from almost spoken-word to high melodic tones as she gives you the strength to let people know you are not okay.
