Lucy Lane – I’m Not Coming (2022)

Lucy Lane is hitting out with the brazen and unapologetic pleasure anthem ‘I’m Not Coming’. A track that is packed with double meanings, it meditates on anxiety, shame and the trauma that makes pleasurable experiences seem impossible. Commanding your attention from the first note, the direct lyrics merge with the genre-defying melody to keep you hooked.

A wonderfully sex-positive single, it acts as a reminder to everyone that you need to clearly communicate with your partner, to heal old wounds and find the pleasure you both want. As a debut single it is really setting the bar high and leaves you eager to see what she has in store for us in the future. After teaching herself all about bedroom musical production, she worked with Soho Sonic Studios to perfect this single.

‘I’m Not Coming’ hits the ground running with a sound that has you moving to the rhythm before you realise what has happened. There are hints of the true depth of the single in the opening that leads you to a rise of instrumentation. The chorus bursts with a dancing vibe that turns up the energy of the track to 11. The guitar riffs that fly out after the chorus are a pleasure to listen to as they weave their way between the beats. It is an interesting melody that brings the best elements of pop and rock together with an infusion of dancing vibes. Everything comes together for a pumping and rousing sound that shakes you up from the inside out. There are some dynamic movements in the melody that bring new swings to the melody, while retaining the authentic edge of the track. A truly genre-defying melody, it inundates your senses while bolstering the vocals.

Lane’s vocals enter with a rather delicate touch that has a small hint of uncertainty that perfectly moves into the chorus. The tentative nature of her delivery taps into the shame and anxiety that fills many people, making pleasurable acts almost impossible. This leads you to the first chorus that rises with a vulnerability that comes with unleashing your thoughts and emotions for the first time. The anxious feelings slowly drain from the single and are replaced with a confidence in yourself and your ability to communicate what you need. By the second chorus, her performance is packed with self-confidence that heals the old wounds that caused the anxiety and tentative flows of the opening. As the single progresses, her vocals gain a slight dance vibe with the repetition of the chorus taking the genre-defying edge of the track to a new level.

Lucy Lane moves from tentative and anxious to empowered and confident through the genre-defying, danceable and addictive flows of ‘I’m Not Coming’. The melody is packed with the best elements of different genres to get you dancing to the empowerment. Her vocals are expressive as they slowly build your confidence and will get stuck in your head.
