Track of the Day: Lucija – Firefly
Influenced by the likes of Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone and Melanie Martinez, one would expect Lucija to have a soulful voice and sassy attitude – you’re not far off. Hailing from Ljubljana, Slovenia, Lucija is a young artist whose music might fall into the “dream pop meets indie-pop” genre, but her evocative vocals add an edge to the sound. Quite a new artist, the songstress has a small following but is making big waves. Featured on Music Crowns, Entertainment News Flash and Rising Artists Blog, her music is slowly doing the rounds. We introduce Lucija to you with her debut single ‘Firefly’.
Written, recorded and produced during the pandemic 2021 lockdown, ‘Firefly’ is the rest of frustration, boredom and hopeless desperation. Using the power of social media, Lucija’s parents prompted attention to their talented teenager by releasing a demo of ‘Firefly’. Soon, the Slovenia-based singer was in the studio with producer JAMirko. Yet, while the single is polished, JAMirko retains the “intimacy of her bedroom recording” by incorporating certain “happy mistakes (such as mouse clicks)”. For more, the percussion or “happy mistakes” add a true innocence and innovativeness to the song.
Highly reminiscent of Lana Del Rey with the intimacy of Adele, Lucija combines heartfelt emotions over a haunting melody. Using a barebones style, the acoustic-driven sound prompts tenderness to the mellow tune. If you combine the basic guitar with Lucija’s soulful tones, you have a passionate, sincere, and sentimental track. What really shocks me about ‘Firefly’ is the sophistication and reflective maturity of the vocals, but yet there is an innocent childishness in the background.
Based on the poignancy and elegant smoothness of ‘Firefly’, I find it difficult to believe Lucija is only 12 years old. Yes, only 12 years old! It seems she was born to perform with her obscure vocals sending shivers down your spine. I can’t wait to see what else this young girl has for us!
