Lucie Glang – Seagull (2024)

On her Spotify she shares that she is “learning as I go” but listening to Lucie Glang, it seems she has already mastered the art of making music. A natural talent, singer-songwriter Glang stirs a passion for music in herself and everyone who listens to her. This is my introduction to Glang, but she is already ensnaring senses across the globe. From the UK to the USA, France, Portugal and Germany, the Germany-based artist has been described as mind-blowing, comforting and beautiful. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Seagull’.

Following her well-received singles ‘Coffee’ and ‘Friend’, ‘Seagull’ is a moving flood of old-school folk with contemporary folk-pop sensibilities. Leaning toward the sound of Lizzy McAlpine and Phoebe Bridgers, Glang effortlessly taps into the soothing intimacy of popular modern-day folk artists. Recorded and produced with Danish producer Martin Korsgaard, ‘Seagull’ fuses a light-hearted, laidback acoustic guitar with silky synths creating a haunting, dreamlike soundscape. As with many folk tracks, a heartfelt tenderness can be heard in a seemingly simplistic approach; however, the kaleidoscopic push and pull of ‘Seagull’ plucks listeners from tranquil sincerity to tumultuous vulnerability.

While an intimacy certainly exists in the execution, ‘Seagull’ captures a deeper intensity with a likeness to Joni Mitchell in the moving lyricism. In a melodic ebb and flow, Glang captures the complexity of human emotion when dealing with life, love and loss. Sincere, sentimental and introspective, ‘Seagull’ uses the beauty of nature to express the difficulty of human conflict. She explains:

“’Seagull’ takes you on a journey to a stormy island, drawing comparisons to human relationships. The seagull becomes a symbolic narrator screeching over the sea and watching the storm from above. It tells about similarities between nature and human behaviour… about facing the arrival of a storm, similar to human conflicts, the calm before and after, inspired by what a seagull will look down to when flying over the changing ocean…”
