Luch Stefano – Butterflies (2023)
“Edgier than Sheeran but softer than Stormzy”, singer-songwriter Luch Stefano’s music is hard-hitting but also soothes the soul. The last time we heard from Stefano (review-wise) was his well-received single ‘Night Ride’ in 2021. Hop a couple of years on and he is still turning heads working on his new album HErARTWORK. Dripping in as several singles – one released every six weeks – Stefano tantalises us with his melodies filling us with anticipation for the next song. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Butterflies’.
Following his tracks ‘I Like It On You’, ‘Two Beers’ and ‘Tiny Bedroom’, ‘Butterflies’ is Stefano’s fourth release this year (as well as the fourth single off his upcoming album). With a growing reputation as a pop artist, who happens to have been featured on BBC News, BBC Introducing and performing for notable artists like Rizzle Kicks and Conor Maynard, Stefano leans toward the commercial pop side of things in his songs – but he shows his versatility in HErARTWORK.
Traipsing various styles of pop from upbeat folk-pop in ‘Two Beers’ to a sharper slick of indie-pop in ‘Butterflies’, Stefano embraces diversity in his music. Similar to the past three tracks, an Ed Sheeran influence is evident; however, there is a sharper, bolder, less soothing tone to ‘Butterflies’. Recorded by Stefano with mastering by Stuart Hawkins, the single layers acoustic guitar atop a bold backbeat pulsating as if were a heart beating throughout the melody. The interspersed strings bring a dash of eclecticism further enhanced with a simple keyboard breaking in here and there. Smooth with a feisty edge, an intricacy exists in what appears a simple pop arrangement.
Luch Stefano’s voice is often described as professional, amazing and similar to Ed Sheeran, and I won’t deny that when it comes to ‘Butterflies’. Interestingly, while sophistication exists in the song and his rich vocals, a raw innocence peaks out making it more emotional. He explains:
“The song delves into the emotions and complexities of having strong feelings for someone while going on numerous dates, but failing to ignite the anticipated ‘butterflies.’ The inspiration for this vibrant and energetic love song came from a memorable date where I spent over £100 on cocktails, and to my amusement, the night ended with my date eating the burger I had just bought for our journey home!”
Capturing a sense of frustration, exasperation, disappointment and an “oh, I am wasting my time”, Luch Stefano releases his single ‘Butterflies’.
