Lucas Player – More Than You (2025)

Blending classical training with alternative experimentation, singer-songwriter Lucas Player stands with one foot in structured composition, and the other in free-falling eclecticism. Enigmatic and innovative, Player stands tall on his classical foundation with kaleidoscopic musical tendrils twirling about in a blissful haze. The US-based musician began his musical journey a few years ago at age 15, performing under the moniker Kibishi; however, two years in, his catalogue disappeared and Kibishi removed himself from public view. Today 21-year-old Player returns with his new single ‘More Than You’.

The first release in over three years, ‘More Than You’ could be described as a slice of indie-rock meets alternative pop – but that doesn’t do Player justice. Pulsating drums belie a powerful piano in a seemingly simplistic soundscape, but the beauty of the barebones charm is kaleidoscopic and soul-stirring. A mellifluous flow drives ‘More Than You’ eagerly setting the listener adrift a glistening sonic river, but there is more than meets the eye. In the hushed lull of calm, chaotic turmoil exists like tumultuous waves swirling beneath the river’s glassy surface.

Bold and endearing, but with vulnerable melancholy, ‘More Than You’ is far more than a simple few minutes of music. For me, the instrumentation builds a hazy headiness as you lose yourself in the track. Yet, just as the arrangement is breathtaking, it is Player’s hushed vocals that up the ante. Masterfully teetering between confident structure and enigmatic whispers, Lucas Player showcases his deep understanding of emotion and music.

Melodically, ‘More Than You’ is significant and intriguing with its obscurity; however, the theme and inspiration enhance the song’s profoundness. Player explains:

“A confession from a former music composition student who left everything behind to pursue his dream… at 21, I’m breaking my silence with a song that’s been keeping me awake at night. It’s the most important song I’ve ever written and my first words after years of holding back… Some years you win, some years you build character. I definitely spent more years in the latter…”
