Lucas Pasley – Til The End (2024)
Capturing the core of Appalachian music with a slick twist of contemporary Americana, singer-songwriter Lucas Pasley preserves traditional styles in a modern-day wrapper making his music accessible and appealing for all generations. This is my introduction to Pasley, but his tunes sit in my heart like a timeless, comfortable old friend without having heard anything from him before. While Spotify brings us music from 2017, the US-based artist is established as a notable musician across his native Sparta (in the heart of the Southern Appalachians), as well as a musical charmer at various US festivals, and performing as part of the group Gap Civil. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Til The End’.
Following his well-received tunes ‘Laissez-Faire Love’ and ‘How’s Mama’, Lucas Pasley joins forces with producer Mat Leppanen in the new track ‘Til The End’. At first listen, Pasley’s guitar stands out as a prominent driving instrument in the melody, yet still carrying the drums like a sophisticated sonic wrapper. Using his skills with a banjo, Pasley adds a pulse to the mellifluous song. For me, however, it is the fiddle that steals the show instrument-wise. Slivering through ‘Til The End’ with a silvery tale, it invites a concoction between old-school folk with vibrant modern-day flairs.
The melody is a vivid walk through a musical field, but it is Pasley’s vocals that up the ante so to say. Gruff and husky with a smooth warmth fluttering through the bold baritone, Pasley’s voice – as with the other elements – leans toward retro blues-folk with a slick of familiar Americana. Not only is ‘Til The End’ a song traipsing across genres and eras, it is a track that warms and comforts while oozing vulnerability.
Lucas Pasley describes his music as a tune to “take your mind and heart on a journey into itself”, and this is definitely what ‘Til The End’ exudes. Sorrowful and melancholy, but with a rush of sincere warmth, ‘Til The End’ is a song for the ages. I cannot wait for more from this talented musician.
