Love Ghost – Venganza Del Fantasma (2022)

From Brazil to Spain, Australia to the USA, US-based foursome Love Ghost have been described as “…charismatic” (Rock Era Magazine), “…powerful, rich and edgy…driven by innovation with its unique mix…” (Headbanger News) and “…known for their deep musical skills that are intertwined with amusing lyrics” (Sinusoidal Music). Turning the heads of curators and international audiences alike, Love Ghost has found their music featured on The Other Side Reviews (that’s us!) so we know what to expect from the lads…or do we? In their collaborative EP Venganza Del Fantasma, the lads show they are far from pedestrian with lots of talent to share.

Following the pop-punk meets melodic metal song ‘Ghost Town’ (a track found on Venganza Del Fantasma), the four-track EP is a monumental collaboration with various Latin artists. ‘Ghost Town’ (performed with Santa RM) opens the record adding a tinge of hip-hop to Love Ghost’s pop-punk sound; however, the underlying metal brings a deeper, darker emotion to the track. Moving onto ‘Inferno’, Love Ghost retain the darkness of melodic metal with Conejo adding a rap element into the melody. What I adore most about both ‘Ghost Town’ and ‘Inferno’ is the effortless merging of heavy rock, emo and bold contributions bringing diverse, but simultaneously soothing flow into the tracks.

Interestingly enough, after two darker, heavier tracks, Love Ghost showcases its versatility with lighter, more upbeat songs. The collaboration with Vanity Vercetti, ‘ALI3N’, retains the pop side of pop-punk making it a toe-tapping track within the mix. However, there is an even smoother tone in the final song ‘Pick Myself Up’ (including the contribution of singer Lou Cornago) – a tender, heartfelt ballad (of sorts) ending Venganza Del Fantasma on a high note.

Venganza Del Fantasma is certainly a head-spinning swirl of genre-bending sound, but it is always the lyricism that adds profoundness to Love Ghost (for me, at least). Tapping into our consciousness and extricating the grittier, grungier pieces one by one, Venganza Del Fantasma is a beautiful sonic biopsy. From the perspective of a psychopath venturing into the borders of our minds in ‘Inferno’, to the hopeless whimsy of a hapless romantic in ‘Pick Myself Apart’, Love Ghost has an insatiable way of encapsulating the trauma, desperation and elegant vulnerability in their music.
