Love Ghost – Snap (2023)
Love Ghost always hits the three Is of amazing artists – intoxicating, infectious and inimitable. With abrupt bites of pop-punk shrouded in forceful emo-rock ambience, the US-based foursome is the definition of the fifth element. The lads are a scorching force of nature on their own but collaborations with other artists up the ante. Taking the Love Ghost talent on the road, frontman Finnegan Bell is tapping into various genres with Latin artists down in Mexico. From the Latin pop-rock tones of Blnko in ‘Veneno’ to the rap-rock sounds of FLVCKKA in ‘Haunted House’, Love Ghost show versatility, innovation and eagerness to tackle new genres.
Following ‘Haunted House’ and ‘GLOCK’ – a metal meets trap collaboration with Dan Garcia, Bell hurls himself into a darker pop-punk meets rap sonic font with ‘Snap’. Joining forces once again with Latin Grammy nominee producer BrunOG, ‘Snap’ has all the signs of a grimy and raw but sophisticated single. The pop-rock tone supports a melodic structure with rhythmic guitars and pounding drums; however, it is the rap above that brings edginess to ‘Snap’.
Tipping his hat at the pop-punk/pop-rock sounds of the 90s, ‘Snap’ sets you off on a mellifluous river of sound. While you enjoy this flowing tune, tumultuous waves not only shudder beneath the surface but break out with bold beats. Gritty and harsh, Mexican artist CHZTER’s voice punctures the melody presenting a domination of the song. Interestingly, this leads to a nu-metal sound clinging to the chords.
Metamorphic in its cacophony of sound, ‘Snap’ is something unreal twirling your head with the kaleidoscopic insanity. Bell’s vocals are always warm with a bite in the execution and in ‘Snap’ he reminds me greatly of Chester Bennington. I find this intriguing as Linkin Park touched on mental health and defeating your demons, as is the theme of ‘Snap’. The song is about “transforming into someone or something that you wanted to be but felt like you couldn’t due to depression. It’s about defeating a part of yourself that you no longer resonate with…”
