Love Ghost – Ski Mask (2024)
For several years, US-based rock group Love Ghost have shared their deep insight into the human soul with audiences across the globe. From the Rockpalast festival in Germany to Amazon’s Gamergy Festival in Mexico City, the lads have played across four continents. Yet, just as their music is electric and enigmatic on stage, the forcefulness of a live set can be heard… no, it is felt with each note screaming from your speakers.
Following their well-received single ‘Nightshade and Cocaine’, Love Ghost collaborates with Swedish singer-songwriter and producer Skold on ‘Ski Mask’. Taken from their upcoming album Love Ghost x Skold, it tackles the issue of mental health and addiction. Known for digging into the grittier side of life, Love Ghost’s music is filled with triumph and tragedy; ‘Ski Mask’ creeps into the kaleidoscopic but rather dark pool of melancholy, desperation and inner turmoil. Frontman Finnegan Bell explains:
“’Ski Mask’ is a… rock song about addiction and desperation. The lyrics touch on holding yourself and the world hostage to get what you think you desire. It is the sound of a civilization the day after losing the war…”
Leaning strongly toward vintage grunge and hard rock with flecks of alternative rock fluttering about the melody, ‘Ski Mask’ is a three-and-a-half-minute rush of dark, hard-hitting sound. Quickly harkening back to the rock bands of the 90s/2000s, a vintage grungy emo tone gleans across the melody; however, Love Ghost grabs listeners with contemporary edginess –the lyricism being a profound take on timeless themes.
Crashing drums, scorching guitars and a bold bass whirl about a slightly eerie, gut-wrenching vibe. Then again, Bell’s rich vocals hold you close in a comfortable hug as the musical madness rushes past. A sense of understanding, acceptance and “don’t worry, we can make it through together” sits in ‘Ski Mask’ enhancing the song’s intensity. Sincere, reflective, but also quietly chaotic, ‘Ski Mask’ is another shining example of Love Ghost’s sophistication, elegance and raw originality.
In addition to the single, Love Ghost released an official music video for ‘Ski Mask’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
