Love Ghost – Pulp (2022)

With their pulsing energetic sound, Love Ghost have broken the chains of trauma in ‘Цепи’, after the unleashing of their inner beast in ‘Wolfsbane’. They are now diving into another heavy topic with ‘Pulp’ which is all about an addict’s relationship with God. Inspired by Charles Bukowski’s novel of the same name, the single draws on the band’s own struggles with addiction, depression and loneliness.

As they bring the story of the single to life, they weave in the important reminder that we all face struggles as we look for inner peace. The exceptionally expressive tones of their music is potentially the perfect vehicle to highlight this message and really drives it home. While tapping into modern life, there is something wonderfully timeless about the messages of their music.

‘Pulp’ hit you with a foot-stomping beat that gets you tapping to the single before you realise what has happened. It is a relatively subdued opening that allows the vocals to really shine through the opening verse. As the beats push you toward the chorus, there is a warble of tones that dance between them, sinking hooks into your brain. The crash of rock tones that signify the chorus brings the energy of the band and gets your entire body moving to the rhythm. As you move, your senses push and fight through the struggles faced as you overcome an addiction. The rise and fall of the melody through the verses and chorus is a great representation of the flows of struggling through problems and grasping for something to help you find inner peace. It is a really infectious melodic movement that has you turning the volume up, particularly in the latter moments of the track.

Against the beats of the melody, the vocals flow with a smoothness that is all emo rock goodness. There is a feeling of weariness woven into the performance, alongside a dash of hopelessness. This turns into an almost angered plea on the chorus as the vocals call out to a higher power. There is a feeling that you have been abandoned to struggle on your own, but the faith in something greater remains. While there is a touch of religious overtones, the main line of the vocals is the struggle with your own demons that you face on the journey to inner peace and happiness. There is a really powerful message woven into vocals that have you shouting out with the band on the chorus.

Using the expressive rock flows of ‘Pulp’, Love Ghost fight through the struggles of addiction, and losing faith, and help us find some inner peace. There is a wonderful rise and fall to the melody that journeys through subdued beats to driving rock tones that have you turning the volume up. The vocals are smooth as they enter, before turning into a pained plea on the chorus that has you yelling out with the band.
