Love Ghost – Payback (2023)

From Ireland to Germany, Japan to Mexico and all across their native USA, Love Ghost has been reaching listeners across the globe. Not only are they tickling audiences’ ears, but the lads are also reputed for loud, energetic and ferocious live performances. The Other Side Reviews (that’s us) were first introduced to the fivesome three years ago with their single ‘Outer Space’ – that’s when the Love Ghost bug hit, and it hasn’t let go. It’s like being addicted to chocolate. You could say no, but who wants to resist it when you adore the taste? The latest addition to this addictive group’s discography is the single ‘Payback’.

Typically filled with ferocious fusions of alternative rock, pop-punk and emo rock, Love Ghost’s songs pack a powerful punch with a heart-stopping lingering once the melody stops. Following their brash single ‘Veneno’, the lads take a step back traipsing the realm of 90s grunge. Soft, flowing and soothing in a way, the song has elegant charm wrapped in a gruff rock tone. It lies somewhere between Nirvana and Soundgarden clothed in a sonic tapestry with an almost palpable grittiness woven into the mix. Interestingly, while a simplistic rawness lurks in the tune, the song is still rich, bold and cuts to the core.

Pounding drums meet crashing guitars bringing rugged energy to the single, although there is still a darker slowness to ‘Payback’. I find this intriguing as it not only shows innovation in Love Ghost’s music but also a pure connection to the theme of the track. Perfectly expressing “revenge and redemption”, the lads send a sharp bite of vulnerability and malice through ‘Payback’.

Unafraid to touch on the purest, most complex parts of humanity, Love Ghost look at those dark, grimy sides of life that we often look to avoid. A collaborative track with SKOLD (Marilyn Manson, Motionless In White and Shotgun Messiah), ‘Payback’ steps up as another anthemic tune for the insatiable Love Ghost.

In addition to the single, Love Ghost x SKOLD released a music video for ‘Payback’ that can be viewed on their official YouTube channel. Please note: this video uses strobe effects, flashing images and lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
