Love Ghost – Human Error 404 (2023)

From the depths of despair to the demolition of inner demons, the highs of being in love and the swarm of existential complexity, Love Ghost traipes across the intricacies of humanity in a powerful pop-punk strut. Last month, Love Ghost hit our ears with ‘Snap’ – a collaboration between frontman Finnegan Bell and CHZTER. Before that, there was the nu-metal meets trap single ‘GLOCK’ featuring Dan Garcia. Skip ahead from ‘Snap’ and Love Ghost brings us their new single ‘Human Error 404’.

The latest release as part of Love Ghost’s collaboration with Mexican artists, ‘Human Error 404’ is a gritty, rugged, brutal two-and-a-half-minute swirl of alternative rock. Unlike ‘Snap’, ‘Human Error 404’ has a smoother, more mellifluous flow to the melody; however, the chaotic intensity of ‘Snap’ and ‘GLOCK’ slices through in a subdued tone. It is the fusion of two loud, raucous musicians, Ritorukai and Love Ghost, but with a veil of calm hiding the madness.

Taken at face value, ‘Human Error 404’ is a song to play alongside artists like Linkin Park, Radiohead and My Chemical Romance; a song oozing desperation in its rock-inspired sheen. If you look a little closer, there is a profoundness to be felt in both the tune and its lyricism.

Touching on themes of isolation and alienation, ‘Human Error 404’ tackles inner turmoil, angst, frustration and desperation. Interestingly, while the lyrics capture the raw emotion in words, it is the melody that brings that emotion to life. From the grungy lilt and alternative rock doom to Bell’s rage-infused screams, the arrangement encapsulates the agony of demons swirling about your head with the dampened sadness and hollow listlessness of being present but not fitting in.

Sincere and sentimental with a flicker of fierce anger, Love Ghost and Ritorukai lift the lid of lost isolation to peer at the complexity beneath in ‘Human Error 404’.
