Love Ghost – Do You Like Me Now? (2024)

One of my favourite quotes is from Love Ghost’s Finnegan Bell – “music is a language for emotion… language can evoke emotion, but music hits you in the part of the brain that doesn’t have a capacity for language.” As an isolated child in an extroverted work, Bell described music as “…sort of a saving grace” in our interview with the US-based artist. His aim with Love Ghost is to give people a catharsis to get out of their heads and understand they are not alone in dealing with issues like mental health. In ‘GOD DAMN’, Love Ghost delved into the intricacies of inner turmoil, frustration and anxiety but with an empowering hopefulness. They continue this exploration of emotion in the latest single ‘Do You Like Me Now?’.

Recorded and produced by Mike Summers, ‘Do You Like Me Now?’ is a hurricane of nu-metal and pop-punk thrashing about with kaleidoscopic ferocity. Following the well-received singles ‘GOD DAMN’ and ‘Tiana’, this slip to a heavier, harder, more intense rush of sound punches you in the stomach leaving you gasping for breath. Collaborating with nu-metal musician Cinnamon Babe there is a nostalgic nod to iconic acts like Linkin Park and Rage Against The Machine in ‘Do You Like Me Now?’.

While the vocals are not in the league of Chester Bennington or Zack de la Rocha, palpable aggression exists in Cinnamon Babe’s memorable screams. Layered with Bell’s rich pop-punk vocals, an interplay exists between insanity and soothing – and that’s just the vocals. Crashing drums and raging guitars scorch across the sonic hurricane burning your eyes but keeping you intent on seeing the rush of colour in the chaotic bubble. No eye of the storm for ‘Do You Like Me Now?’, but a sense of calm and empowerment riddle the intricate oscillation between damning dark and hopeful light.

Wild and slightly riotous with a rampageous rush of music, Love Ghost and Cinnamon Babe prick your skin with ‘Do You Like Me Now?’ but simultaneously link arms roaring “Well, stuff you” to all the haters who want to destroy them.
