Lone Stag – Forgotten But Not Gone (2024)
Appreciating the raw power of music to soothe, enrage, inspire or empower – all dependent on what your emotional needs are at that moment – Lone Stag hopes people will listen to what he has to say. In an intimate way, he is “trying to make music that I and other folk love as much as I love the music of my heroes”; and we’re certain he is reaching that rainbow with his folk-inspired melodies. This is not our introduction to Lone Stag as he crossed our ears in 2022 with ‘Don’t Lie’. Yet, it is as exciting as if we were meeting him for the first time. Come with us as we delve into Lone Stag’s most recent release ‘Forgotten But Not Gone’.
Hailing from Scotland, singer-songwriter Lone Stag dips into the intricacy of existence in ‘Forgotten But Not Gone’. Following the profound and sincere single ‘Don’t Lie’, I expected something as powerful; however, the tender poignancy driven through ‘Forgotten But Not Gone’ is beyond touching or tender. The folk sidebar to Phil Collins’ ‘Separate Lives’, Lone Stag checks in on the less desirable societal state with a vulnerable narrative of the less well-off in the social divide. The incorporation of both male and female vocals enhances the prevalence of an intricate fragility transcending age, sex, or cultural backgrounds.
Adopting a DIY approach to music, ‘Forgotten But Not Gone’ captures the rawness of a home-produced track. For me, this rough raw grittiness further enhances the delicacy of a dreary but vital element of existence. The acoustic guitar melds with the harmonica offering a warm feeling with indie-folk flairs – then toss a banjo and snare drum into the mix for a toe-tapping edge. Lone Stag explains:
“’Forgotten But Not Gone’ is a Dylan-esque, finger-picked number that veers from personal introspection to social commentary – but with banjo, harmonica and a kid’s snare drum thrown into the mix for foot-stompin’ breakdown.”
