Lo-fi Jones – Bad Technology (2024)
Hailing from the rugged foothills of North Wales, brothers Liam and Siȏn Rickard push the boundaries of folk music with an eclectic shove creating an obscure melting pot of sound. A prominent force in the growing wave of emerging Welsh artists, Lo-fi Jones immerses audiences in their culture, language, and plain old Welsh awesomeness. If you take a look at some of my reviews, you’ll notice I have a fondness for the Welsh; not entirely sure why, but there is something special about them. In 2022, Lo-fi Jones turned heads with the critically acclaimed debut album Llanast yn y Llofft. Today we take a gander at their song ‘Bad Technology’.
Following their well-received single ‘My Love’, and the title track of their most recent EP, ‘Bad Technology’ can be described as a rather amusing take on people’s relationship with technology – not the good stuff, the “what-the-hell” stuff. From the failures of a broken toaster to the constant need for rebooting, Lo-fi Jones captures the raw frustration, anger, anxiety and “oh bloody hell, not again… turn on you **** stupid phone” attitude we all experience at some time. Interestingly, while it is a fun song, the tumultuous anger and desire to break something because it’s letting you down linger.
Smile-inducing in its playfulness, the songwriters intoxicate with words alone; however, the melody is not to be ignored. Finding a line between indie-rock and indie-folk with slivers of blues lingering beneath, a combination of guitars, drums and quick saxophone carries the almost spoken word gruffness of the vocals. Confident, bold and rich, but simultaneously vulnerable and filled with despair, Lo-fi Jones eloquently captures raw emotion with ‘Bad Technology’.
In addition to the single, Lo-fi Jones released an official music video for ‘Bad Technology’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
