Litvar – You Should Find A New Boyfriend (2022)
Whether they knew it or not, childhood friends Rex Thurstan (guitar and vocalist) and Violet Falkowski (bass) started burning the embers of Litvar early on. It wasn’t apparent, but their joint songwriting and performing in various bands built a strong bond between the two. The turning point for the pair (and the technical origin of Litvar) was when they met drummer Joe Lemieux in 2019 at a gig in Connecticut – the rest, as they say, is history.
During the Covid-19 pandemic years, Thurstan and Lemieux began writing songs for Litvar’s debut album releasing their debut single ‘Hi I’m Andy’ in mid-2020. Later that year their debut album The Greatest Movie of All Time was released, and the band began turning even more heads with coverage from numerous blogs and radio stations. True, it is only in 2021 that Falkowski was recruited and, thus, they began performing at large festivals like SXSW. Showing audiences that small-town indie-rock bands are as impressive as larger names, Litvar became a force to be reckoned with. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘You Should Find A New Boyfriend’.
Following their track ‘No One Tastes Like You’, ‘You Should Find A New Boyfriend’ is an eclectic merging of indie-pop, indie-rock and alternative rock in an explosive three minutes (give or take). Initially presented as a simplistic pop song with a soothing, gentle flow, Litvar eases you into a lighter side of ‘You Should Find A New Boyfriend’; however, this is merely a lulling into a comfortable sense of security. Halfway through the single, an explosion of alt-rock fury is heard in the arrangement.
While the opening is a charming, elegant flow of music, for me the real power comes through when the sound changes pace. Showcasing innovativeness and versatility in this transition, Litvar proves they are no one-trick pony. The dynamic guitars and pounding drums toss you into a sonic whirlwind with kaleidoscopic dots flitting before your eyes. Bold, rich vocals add sensitivity and vulnerability to the track that not only sends your soul soaring but leaves you breathless.
“Sonically, ‘Boyfriend’ is us playing with dynamics…satisfying our thirst for huge modern rock choruses. Lyrically, it’s about searching for space while being swallowed by anxiety using the idea of begging for air in a strangling relationship.” – Litvar on ‘You Should Find A New Boyfriend’
