Litvar – Alone (Not Lonely) (2023)

Turning audiences’ heads from the stereotypical big-city rockers to small-town indie-rock groups, Litvar is a leader in the “we’re from a smaller town but don’t mess with us” sonic wave. Melding the natural musical talent of Rex Thurstan, Violet Falkowski and Joe Lemieux, Litvar is inspired by their life experiences growing up in the lesser-known Willimantic, Connecticut. Profound, complex and intriguing, but with a tender whimsy in the mix, the group’s music has an originality and authenticity difficult to imitate. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Alone (Not Lonely)’.

Taken from their upcoming sophomore album, Eloquently Aimless, ‘Alone (Not Lonely)’ is Litvar’s first release in 2023. Following the single ‘You Should Find A New Boyfriend’, the trio return with another eclectic fusion of indie-rock, alternative rock and indie-pop. Heavier than the previous song, ‘Alone (Not Lonely)’ hits you between the eyes with profound potency. It might be the inclusion of the spoken word, almost hip-hop style vocals between bold, powerful indie-rock tones that gives the song intensity. All I know is there is a palpable density and poignancy to ‘Alone (Not Lonely)’ in the genre-bending soundscape.

While the song oozes melancholy and despair with an intimate sense of grief, ‘Alone (Not Alone)’ is a song of self-awareness, reflection and insight. A love ballad at its core, the single can tug at your heartstrings. Yet, despite the heartsore tone, it has a cheekiness woven into the lyricism tinged with sarcastic sentimentality. It is about trying to be sad but with the cool trendiness of chronic pessimism. Sounds a little messed up that pessimism should be cool, but with the state of today’s reality can you really blame us?

Recorded at the late Elliot Smith’s New Monkey Studio, Litvar captures their live sound and infuses it into ‘Alone (Not Lonely)’. The band explain: “we first started working on ‘Alone (Not Lonely)’ in February of 2021…it ended up being one of our favourite songs to play live, so when it came time to record our second album it was at the top of the list. Recorded at New Monkey Studio…we tracked the bass, acoustic guitar and drums live together to try to give the recording the same feel that we put into our live performance.”

In addition to the single, Litvar released an official music video for ‘Alone (Not Lonely)’. You can view the video below or on their official YouTube channel.
