littleuniverses – Magic (2023)

If you enjoy the music of Beth Gibbons or Laura Veirs, the chances are likely you’ll find fulfilment when listening to littleuniverses. Creating music with the aim of connecting with listeners, this Canadian songstress oozes passion, tenderness and heartfelt embraces in her songs. She always knew she wanted to be an artist and since her debut track ‘Back to Life’ (released in 2019), littleuniverses has been sharing her pure artistry with the masses. In fact, the publication Karl Is My Unkle likened her to Depeche Mode but also mentioned that “…there is no doubt that the artist is creating a dimension of her own.” The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Magic’.

Taken off her upcoming self-titled album (due for release in February 2023), ‘Magic’ is an atmospheric song about the harmonic interplay of the elements in magic. A love song to earth, fire, water, air, and ether, littleuniverses pays homage to deeper connections on another existential level. As I mentioned, littleuniverses aims to connect with her audiences on an intimate level and this is highly evident in the new single. Penned during a camping trip with her boyfriend, she explains that “the sheer beauty of nature and their experiences deep in the lush forest inspired the song…the connection with him and the elements brought forth this sense of magic.”

A collaborative piece, littleuniverses is joined on ‘Magic’ by musicians Arjan Miranda (guitar and tubular bells), Brent Arnold (cello) and Randall Dunn (synths). Draw together these skills, add littleuniverses on vocals and piano, and you have a sonic tapestry filled with brightly coloured threads. Following her well-received single ‘Sword’, ‘Magic’ leans towards old-school post-punk with darker tinges of folk woven into the melody. As with ‘Sword’, which is included in the upcoming album, ‘Magic’ has a cinematic slant capturing your emotions and sending you off on a soul-soaring journey. Interestingly enough, while I expected something lighter when touching on magic, this single is elegantly morbid with hints of vulnerability.

Anthemic, heartfelt and intoxicating, ‘Magic’ is delicate but with an underlying robustness blending all the elements of magic.
