Little Fuss – Girls At Parties (2022)
Art-pop is an elusive category generally defined as pop that gathers ideas from other art mediums, such as fashion, fine art, cinema, and avant-garde literature. Now it seems that the Boston duo Little Fuss can be easily placed into that category of art-pop. Little Fuss has not been on the scene very long, but Olivia Martinez and Cody Von Lehmden have been trying their hand at crafting pop since the Covid-19 pandemic began and they seem to be coming up with some very creative stuff.
Their debut EP Hazy (released in 2021) already created a stir, and so did their live shows. Yet, based on their current single, ‘Girls At Parties’, the duo’s upcoming album of the same name should be one to watch. On the single, Martinez and Von Lehmden definitely show why they deserve to proudly wear that art tag to their pop. With a lot of stylistic influences from the 80s like Kate Bush and David Bowie’s compositional style (circa Scary Monsters And Super Creeps), they add all the modern touches from scratches to subtle raps. At the same time, the duo references a famous impressionistic painting of the same name by Paul Cezanne, talking about “the strangeness of social gatherings”.
It seems that Martinez and Von Lehmden are aiming at the audience that wants not only to enjoy listening and possibly dancing, but also something to think about at the same time, and with the evidence of this single and their recordings so far, they are on a good track to actually do so. ‘Girls At Parties’ is definitely a great introduction to the upcoming album.
