Lisa Murray – Woman In A World (2022)

Combing autobiographical personal narratives in songs, Lisa Murray is not only a person who connects with people but does so in a poetic way. A natural storyteller, Murray can carry your heart in her hand while exploring significant issues in today’s society. This is my introduction to the Irish singer-songwriter, but she has been turning heads since her debut track ‘The Kind Of Girl’. Featured on She Makes Music, Music News, Hot Press, and various radio stations, Murray is reaching an international audience. The latest addition to her repertoire is the single ‘Woman In A World’.

Inspired by the likes of Taylor Swift, Sigrid and First Aid Kit, Murray’s songs are heartfelt pouring her personality into the tunes. With this intense intimacy we really get a sense of who she is, and in ‘Woman In A World’ what it means to be a woman in today’s society. She explains that this track is “…a reflection of the inner thoughts and feelings I have as a woman in today’s day and age. At a time when biases, sexism and brutal violence against women still happens across the globe, this song is an uncomfortable expression of the things people don’t talk about openly. My aspiration for the song Is to raise awareness about the fears and frustrations of the women of this world for those who don’t understand them… I also hope this song will strike a chord with them and help them know they are not alone.”

Following her single ‘if i ever see you again’, Lisa Murray adopts a soft, smooth and flowing pop sound in the piano-led ballad. Tender and charming from the opening chord, she immediately touches your soul with the arrangement. Acoustic-inspired with only her dulcet vocals and elegant piano, the melody effectively expresses the significant message of “being a woman in this world”. It is as if she is speaking directly to you in ‘Woman In A World’. What I find even more intriguing is how the simplistic soundscape seems to enhance the vulnerability, fragility and a sense of empowerment in the track.
