Lisa Keane – Chasing Ghosts (2024)

In 2021 we discovered what would happen if you merged Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift. No, not some weird concoction of distorted shouts but instead the captivating singer-songwriter Lisa Keane; that being said there is a bit of obscurity and alternative off-kilter flecks of sound in Keane. It’s not a bad thing, in fact, we wouldn’t have her any other way. Discovering a raw passion for music as a teenager, the Irish songstress ignited a flame for melodies and poetic lyricism. As the years progressed, the flame turned into a roaring fire stoked by international audiences. Effortlessly ensnaring your senses, from her confident performances to the silky studio releases, it is almost impossible to ignore the insatiable Lisa Keane. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Chasing Ghosts’.

Following her well-received 2023 single ‘Disguise’, ‘Chasing Ghosts’ is a pop-driven track lying somewhere between electronic pop and alternative pop with a lingering hit of folk-pop fluttering in the back. Produced with long-time collaborator Sam Stevenson and mastered by Fergal Davis, ‘Chasing Ghosts’ is a daring concoction of bold beats, shimmering synths, and twinkling keyboards. Interestingly, while there is unity between the various instruments, the track has a disconcerting distortion as Keane finds the line between charmingly smooth and intriguingly chaotic.

Listening to ‘Chasing Ghosts’ is like trying to reach a particular radio frequency only to battle with interspersed messages from the stations slightly above and below your desired stop. Up and down, back and forth, glitchy and orderly, Keane’s new single is unapologetically eclectic and experimental. I find it interesting that this track was inspired by a breakup, as each emotion is perfectly captured with different tones; a real mad-house of feeling and expert reflection of Keane’s masterful understanding of composition. Keane explains:

“I wanted to create a song that people could dance away their feelings to. Even though the lyrics are sad. It can be euphoric to take those sad feelings and create something upbeat and energetic. In a way, it’s taking the negative energy that comes from a break-up and turning it into something positive.”
