Lisa Keane – Already Gone (2024)

It’s a common thing for children to sit their parents down and have them watch their “concerts” as a personal audience. For me, I forced my family to watch me sing and dance to 1980s Madonna; Lisa Keane tapped into her inner Britney Spears belting out numbers by the iconic pop star. As a teen, she embraced her love for songwriting after “…my Mam brought me to record a cover of Tayler Swift’s ‘White Horse for my birthday…” – this is where it all began. Skip ahead a few years and Keane is establishing herself as a singer-songwriter reaching far beyond her Ireland borders. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Already Gone’.

Often compared to the likes of Taylor Swift, Keane’s music leans toward a contemporary pop tone; however, her eclecticism shines through flecking her songs with various flavours of retro and modern-day pop. ‘Chasing Ghosts’ offered a strong electronic flair, while ‘Nightmare’ took us into the realm of dreamy synth-pop. Following ‘Nightmare’, ‘Already Gone’ fuses the dreaminess of bedroom pop with indie-pop boldness and old-school RnB.

Produced by Sam Stevenson with mastering by Fergal Davis, ‘Already Gone’ showcases the sophisticated sprinkling of sound by Stevenson and Davis; however, youthful innocence flutters across adding naivety to maturity. At only two minutes, the track is brief, yet the light-hearted flood of music lingers with the “warm fuzzies” filling your heart. Interestingly, ‘Already Gone’ might be a smile-inducing immersion into Keane’s innovative music, but this is merely a juxtaposition of the profound theme. Keane explains:

“After a breakup, you can spend so long wondering what you did wrong or what you could have changed to make things work. But sometimes things aren’t supposed to work even if you want them to and sometimes it was nothing that you said or did that fractured the relationship. I think it’s important to try and take a step back from a situation like that so you can understand and process things more clearly….”

Sincere and tender with the twinkling joviality of Keane’s impish vocals, ‘Already Gone’ sticks in your head for hours to come. I cannot wait for more from this talented musician.
