Liposuction – She Hz (2023)

The brainchild of Australian singer-songwriter Sunday Hunter, Liposuction is a daring, deviant and decadent act ready for world domination. Combining the talents of multi-instrumentalist Hunter, bass guitarist Shannon Kilcoyne and drummer Guy Drory, Liposuction draws together the sounds of pop-punk and punk-rock in a heart-pounding way. Come with us as we dip into their debut single, ‘She Hz’.

Inspired by the likes of Nine Inch Nails and Devo, Liposuction introduces itself to the world with a leaning towards the hard hitters of the 90s. A bold blast of hard rock explodes from the pop-rock meets alternative rock tone in ‘She Hz’. Opening with a slightly distorted mix of synths, pounding drums and fuzzy guitars, Liposuction seems to tease you with a piece of sonic candy luring you into the chaotic music. As soon as you follow their enticing chocolate, powerful guitars and smashing drums ensnare your senses putting you in a kaleidoscopic haze of music.

Just as the melody keeps you on a high with a crashing of classic rock to end things off, it is Hunter’s vocals that add a haunting to ‘She Hz’. Reminiscent of Courteney Love but with the kick of Lzzy Hale, Hunter’s vocals slither through the song. Showcasing her range and versatility as an artist, she slips from husky spoken word to spine-chilling highs before cooling down with charming elegance.

A rollercoaster ride from beginning to end, one would assume there is some crazy concept behind the controlled chaos. Instead, it is a rather serious theme with a strong message of reflection and hindsight. A tribute to looking back at memories and either cringing or smiling, the frenzied sound captures the heartfelt emotions behind these experiences.

“’She Hz’ is a reflection on the reckless, self-destructive, and sometimes illegal behaviours we undertake in our younger years. When I was a young artist living in Sydney, I would often roam the streets, sometimes trespassing on private property like abandoned warehouses and got myself into trouble a few times. This song is an ode to those years and experiences, like looking through a window into that time of my life.” – Sunday Hunter on ‘She Hz’
