Lily Pierce – Stuck Here, Writing Sad Songs (2025)
Self-described as “an overdramatic oversharer”, singer-songwriter Lily Pierce uses her moving melodies to not only find individual solace but to offer comfort and relatability to others. “Let’s freak out about life together, I have music to go with it!” – her own words inviting listeners to explore life in its grit and glory while soothing tumultuous emotions. Alternative pop might be her musical leaning; however, Pierce binds different flavours of sound presenting originality, eclecticism and innovation as an artist. The latest addition to Pierce’s discography is her single ‘Stuck Here, Writing Sad Songs’.
Following her well-received 2024 singles ‘Lingerie’ and ‘Rogue’, the US-based Pierce steps into 2025 with ‘Stuck Here, Writing Sad Songs’. Produced with Matt Anthony and Chris Griffin, ‘Stuck Here, Writing Sad Songs’ might have a lingering hint of pop, but washed by a rush of pop-rock and indie-rock. With an almighty drag back to the 90s/early 2000s pop-rock scene, Pierce could be the lovechild of Avril Lavigne and Jimmy Eats World; however, the breath of nostalgia is coupled with a significant contemporariness giving the track a sound that is entirely Lily Pierce and no one else.
Kaleidoscopic with the pop-rock combination of bold drums and a soaring guitar, ‘Stuck Here, Writing Sad Songs’ is a track to twirl around to when you think nobody’s watching. Yet, in the same breath, Pierce’s vocals seem separated from the instrumentation coupling an intimate simplicity with the multi-coloured flits of sonic fairy dust. She embraces you with her dulcet voice while retaining a brash bluntness in the poetic theme.
Melodically, ‘Stuck Here, Writing Sad Songs’ is a fun, laidback, happy vibes single; however, a more sinister message lurks in the lyricism. Sinister…well, maybe not the best adjective – let’s say a brash “oh, so stuff you” in the vulnerable tragedy of losing love. I must admit, some of the lyrics made me chuckle despite the sadness as if I were having a conversation with an old friend instead of a quick smile at a new acquaintance.
So, overall, what do I think of Lily Pierce and ‘Stuck Here, Writing Sad Songs’? Inspiring, emotional, and music that delicately unfolds the fragility of life. I cannot wait to hear more from Lily Pierce.
