Lili Joy – She (2023)

At only 20 years of age, singer-songwriter Lili Joy is making a name for herself as a musical sensation. Featuring on season 16 of NBC’s The Voice, the US-based songstress introduced us to her dulcet vocals and jaw-dropping style. In fact, she has even been described as Gwen Stefani, yes that Gwen Stefani, as “beautiful, tender and feminine”. Over the past few years, Lili Joy has captured the hearts of not only US-based audiences but audiences across the globe. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘She’.

Following her well-received track ‘D.W.Y.C.T.’, ‘She’ is Lili Joy’s second release in 2023 and the title track from her upcoming debut album (set for release in July 2023). Collaborating with various industry professionals throughout her career, Lili Joy has been able to create art that is sophisticated but with a sense of raw innocence about it. ‘She’ has Joy teaming up with drummer Aaron Steele and producer John Velasquez in a pop meets jazz swoon.

Unlike ‘Dahlia’ which had a strong hip-hop influence from collaborator Kairo Luna, ‘She’ is a harmonic swirl of music. Combining a haze of guitars with drums and Joy’s mystical vocals, listening to ‘She’ is like running through an ethereal sonic forest. Led by Lili Joy, you travel through the mist of sound without any real direction but, honestly, being lost in the soundscape is the most fascinating sensation. Soft, smooth and charming, Joy’s feminine tones wash over the instrumentation; however, just as haunting and raw as they may be, there is a sophistication exceeding Lili Joy’s youth.

While you can become lost in ‘She’, there is a clear direction when it comes to the song’s poetic lyricism. Penned as a “love letter” to herself, Lili Joy shares empowerment, hopefulness and optimism in this heart-warming single.

“It is one of my favourite songs on the album because it is an expression of all that I have been through pursuing music as a young person, as well as growing up into adulthood. This song was written as a love letter to my past, present and future self. Showing empathy for my past self, giving thanks for my present existence, and holding hope for the future.” – Lili Joy on ‘She’
