Lili Joy – DWYCT (2023)
Described by iconic artist Gwen Stefani as “beautiful, tender and feminine”, singer-songwriter Lili Joy has a delicate vocal style that can touch your soul. Combining elements of indie-pop and old-school jazz, Lili Jay is turning the heads of audiences young and old. This is our introduction to the US-based multi-instrumentalist; however, other critics have been singing her praises for a while. From Brazil’s Music For All and Indie O’Clock to the UK’s Mystic Sons, Lili Joy is clearly making her mark on an international scale. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘DWYCT’.
Following her well-received single ‘Dahlia’, Lili Joy showcases her versatility with ‘DWYCT’. Unlike ‘Dahlia’ which included the hip-hop stylings of Kairo Luna, ‘DWYCT’ adopts an RnB-inspired tone with hints of old-school soul flitting through the arrangement. Soft and tender, we hear Lili Joy’s signature sound drawing you into a hazy melody. Interestingly enough, while the delicacy of her intimate music engulfs you in the beginning there is a quick progression into a drum-heavy pop sound. A collaboration with musicians Aaron Steele (drums), Hayden Coplen (drum fills) and producer John Velasquez, ‘DWYCT’ is a sensual, passionate and soul-stirring piece of music.
Touching on love, loss and self-discovery, ‘DWYCT’ offers a hard-hitting boldness within a sexy layer of soothing calm. Just as the melody ensnares your senses, the steamy lyricism adds another layer of sexiness to the sensational single. As Lili Joy enjoys writing songs that represent her self-development, self-discovery and “well, just growing up”, ‘DWYCT’ could be a coming-of-age anthem. Yet, as it describes a “love affair so good, you can’t stop at just one taste”, it might be beyond the PG side of growing up. Either way, you will not be able to get this song out of your head.
