Li.Lac – Honesty (2021)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Sam Curtice, Li.Lac is an emotive and unique mixture of funk and indie-pop with a soulful jazz undertone. Formed in 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdown, the UK-based artist is relatively new in the music scene but he has already started making waves with his music. Yet to perform any gigs, Li.Lac is known as a recording artist exclusively receiving coverage from BBC Somerset, Bath Radio, Chalkpit Records and Indie Buddie. The latest addition to his growing discography is ‘Honesty’.

Following his single ‘Slow Ride’, Li.Lac adopts a more upbeat, jovial and otherworldly melody with ‘Honesty’. Combining dynamic guitars with steady drums, there is a strong and flowing melodic foundation to ‘Honesty’. While the track may be described as contemporary pop, I like to pay attention to the prominent bassline nodding to old-school funk. We might say that Li.Lac is bringing the funk of the 1970s to the 21st century with his music. Yet, it is not only the toe-tapping melody that keeps me captivated.

With hushed tones, Li.Lac’s gruff vocals seep throw the kaleidoscopic soundscape like a trickle of water through a crevice in a rock. Penned and recorded in Li.Lac’s ground-floor apartment, the song has a sense of optimism and empowerment in the cheery tones. When speaking about ‘Honesty’, Li.Lac explains that the track “…is a hip shaker aimed to encourage people to bring their best into reality. The hooks lyrically demand you to keep growing, keep your chin up and keep up the good work. It’s a celebration of the power of people to do good things and overcoming their inhibitions to do just that.”

Anthemic and heartwarming, ‘Honesty’ is a display of pure innovation at its best. I cannot wait to see what else Li.Lac has in store for his adoring fans.
