Libby Johnston – Right Person, Wrong Time (2023)

Musician, dancer, singer and songwriter, 23-year-old Libby Johnston has been astounding theatregoers, composers, and audiences with her artistic abilities. Trained in ballet, tap, musical theatre and jazz, New Zealander Johnston has performed as Liesl von Trapp in the New Zealand National Tour of The Sound of Music, Nancy in Oliver! at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, and her American debut as Samantha Fulton in Bottle Shock! The Musical at Forestburgh Playhouse. Now residing in New York, Johnston is reaching for the stars with her singing prowess as well as her musical theatre skills. Come with us as we delve into her singer-songwriter world with the debut single ‘Right Person, Wrong Time’.

Lying somewhere between Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Florence Welch, Libby Johnston inserts a heartfelt intimacy into a commercial pop melody. Oddly enough, Johnston was not always confident in her songwriting skills, but we’re terribly delighted she stepped up to the plate (so to say) with ‘Right Person, Wrong Time’. With delicate electropop vibes, the steady synth-driven rhythm elegantly belies her tender but rich vocals.

Produced in collaboration with Santino Cardinale, the ethereal single is filled with hazy textures in a sophisticated sonic package. Haunting in an intoxicating way, ‘Right Person, Wrong Time’ explores human fragility in a simple but simultaneously poignant way. Johnston explains that ‘Right Person, Wrong Time’ is “a song about a toxic relationship. It’s the paradox of someone treating you so horribly yet you defend every word they say and every action they make because, in the end, you’re still holding out hope for them to choose you…you vehemently believe they’re good for you because of your incomparable connection.”

Vivid and robust but with a soft, soothing mellifluous flow, Libby Johnston brings us a musical masterpiece with her insightful debut single ‘Right Person, Wrong Time’.
