Liad Abraham – Call of the Sea (2022)

Liad Abraham brings a book like story quality to his music with the instrumental folk single ‘Call of the Sea’. Through the lyrics of the song, he tells the story of a woman confined to bed by an illness that prevents her from visiting the sea. While she can’t physically be by the sea, the scent and sounds of the ocean remain in her heart, allowing her mind to visit a place she cannot.

Taken from his third album, the single is personal and special as the album was inspired by and dedicated to Abraham’s mother. Using folk, classical and cinematic tones, Abraham builds intricate stories through his music that drop you into the emotions felt by the characters he brings to life. Over the last two years, he has been releasing his original music and capturing the hearts of listeners.

The delicate tones of an acoustic guitar create the opening pull of ‘Call of the Sea’. There is a feeling of yearning woven into the light folk tones of the movement. You can feel the threads of the music reaching out into the distance for a place that brings a sense of solace. This is tempered with a bittersweet feeling of not being able to go to this place. As the single continues, this bittersweet feeling starts to lighten as the understanding that the place is always with you settles. There is a delicate interplay between the notes of the guitar, with the light dance of higher tones skipping over the more sombre undertones.

The music starts to change in the latter parts of the track with a tapering of the lighter tones allowing the lower notes to slowly make their way to the fore. There is a sadness to this movement that settles on your shoulders a little like grief. While the sadness is clear in the sombre tones, the last moments of the melody rise into something truly beautiful. This is the journey of the mind to the place you love that lifts something heavy from your chest and almost brings a tear to the eye. Overall, the movement of the single is masterfully crafted as it takes you on a journey through the chapters of life.
