Lew McKenzie – Cast Away (2022)
From Melody Bites to Obscure Sound, Underground Music Collective, The Static Dive, Buzz Music and various playlists, Lew McKenzie is reaching audiences across the globe. A singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, McKenzie has been sharing his natural talent with listeners since 2014 as a session and backing musician for different artists. Now, however, we are taking a gander (or rather a listen) to his solo project. Embracing solo singing, he released his debut single ‘Retwizt’ in 2020 as an ode to his accomplishments, contributions and black culture. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Cast Away’.
Following his well-received track ‘Masterpiece’, ‘Cast Away’ is an elegant fusion of soul, jazz and RnB. Highly influenced by artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, McKenzie’s music has the intense intimacy, masterful lyricism and outstanding arrangements of these iconic individuals. While ‘Cast Away’, as with ‘Masterpiece’, has a strong sprinkling of Stevie Wonder in the song, McKenzie’s rich vocals seem to slather Marvin Gaye across the more recent track.
Intriguing, rich and bold, this new single highlights McKenzie’s versatility by merging guitars, drums, and his vast vocal range. Smooth and soothing, there is a romantic lilt to ‘Cast Away’ – which is probably the consequence of his velvety voice; however, a profoundness also exists in the song adding another dimension to the tune. McKenzie explains that ‘Cast Away’ “is about longing for your destiny. It’s for the type of people who are in constant search of their idea of refuge. It’s a reminder to keep moving forward.”
Lew McKenzie has an aim to “provide a sense of vintage luxury through his creativity, artistic enrichment, and efforts to generate enthusiasm in all cultures and genres…live luxury through vintage sound”, and he has hit the nail on the head with his charming single ‘Cast Away’.
