Less Killjoy – Palm Trees

With some artists, young or old, name or moniker should be some sort of a giveaway of what kind of music you can expect. That just might be the case with this young Toronto artist, Less Killjoy, and her debut single ‘Palm Trees’. Now whether this is her real name or a moniker makes no difference, she definitely strives for some more joy in her music and most probably in her life altogether. Less Killjoy has decided to reach out to “a community of people who feel safe around one another, despite their race, gender, sexuality, age, or socioeconomic status [and] her raw honesty and true passion for inclusivity make her one to watch.” Even if it is just her first outing, she seems to have built quite a social following based on it. ‘Palm Trees’ and her upcoming EP Pink Grenade will probably help her in her cause significantly.

Like many upcoming artists these days, Less Killjoy doesn’t shy away from combining different musical elements no matter where they are coming from. Her singer-songwriter style blends into heavy beats and rap then picks up a pop melody and rides along with it making the song so easy on the ear. Now, it might seem easy to work in such a songwriting style, but the music has to sound coherent and above all listenable, and Less Killjoy does a great job here to reach that goal.

“I played acoustic guitar, I played the drums and I sang my heart out. Rock bands, wedding bands, coffee shops…I’ve written what feels like a million songs. Only now does it feel like I’m doing it for me.” – Less Killjoy

With these words, she just might explain the ease with which ‘Palm Trees’ lays on one’s ears. With this single and the upcoming EP, Less Killjoy just might be on her way.
