Lauryn Marie – Happy Songs (2022)

Described by Grammy-nominated songwriter Victoria Banks as “…rare and precious”, US-based Lauryn Marie has a way of winning hearts with her musical talent. As a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer, she has her toe in different areas of musical projects. Already establishing herself as a notable artist, this songstress has been featured in numerous international publications, added to various playlists, and even won first place in the American Songwriter Magazine’s Song Contest in 2021. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Happy Songs’.

Using music as a catharsis to express her intimate emotions, Lauryn Marie’s songs speak to people on a deeper level. Following the track ‘December’, ‘Happy Songs’ explores life after a breakup when you realise that many of the things you loved during the relationship don’t feel or sound the same in the aftermath. Lauryn Marie explains that ‘Happy Songs’ is “…about how sometimes I attach certain songs with specific people and when they’re not in my life anymore it’s hard to listen to them.”

From the first listen, one may assume that the upbeat pop-inspired track is jovial both melodically and lyrically; however, Lauryn Marie shows innovativeness as she presents the contrary. Similar to Taylor Swift, but with some distinctiveness, ‘Happy Songs’ has a juxtaposition of bouncy melodies and melancholic lyrics. Interestingly enough, the juxtaposition is evident in Lauryn Marie’s vocals as well as the melody. What I mean is her voice has a happiness to the tone, but she remains vulnerable and desperate throughout ‘Happy Songs’.

Sincere, sentimental, insightful, genuine and brutally honest, Lauryn Marie turns heads with her new track ‘Happy Songs’. I cannot wait for more from this talented individual.
