Laura Dannan – Little Grey (2023)

Described as “…pure honesty with a smile” (KMS Reviews) and “intimate and inviting…” (Send Me Your Ears), Laura Dannan touches people’s hearts with her poetic music. Hailing from Hertfordshire, the UK-based singer-songwriter combines natural storytelling and personal narratives to create relatable melodies. Initially beginning as a drummer, it was the lockdown of 2020 that made Dannan pick up a guitar and discover her passion for songwriting; now, we have a soulful artist difficult to forget. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Little Grey’.

Following a year filled with gigs at notable venues and festivals, Dannan released her debut single ‘Midlife Crisis’ in 2022. Following on the heels of this song about escapism, she brings another sonic sensation to our ears with ‘Little Grey’. As with ‘Midlife Crisis’, the sophomore single has a Joni Mitchell intimacy, a Fiona Apple sentimentality and Amanda Palmer obscurity. Interestingly enough, while these comparisons can be made, Dannan retains authenticity and originality in her music creating something purely Laura Dannan.

Heart-breaking and tender, ‘Little Grey’ is a poignant single with vulnerability oozing through the passionate folk song. The thing is, while there is a vulnerable fragility to the song, it contains a charming element in its theme. Penned as a song about a grey automobile that was sold to make way for an electric car, it has a personal sadness in the lyricism but also contains a heartfelt tale – even though it is of loss and painful yearning.

“This track is a tribute to my dear old car…it was a little grey Audi that I bought way back in 2004 from new; it was for me the ultimate dream car and it felt so good driving it. Over the years it did many miles, saw many things, carried me and my family safely. It was well-loved and never broke down…however, it was a diesel car, had done a lot of miles and the decision was made to upgrade…I said goodbye, felt heartbroken and guilty that I had let this car go…it was the end of an era.” – Laura Dannan on ‘Little Grey’
