Laughing Cats – GYB (2024)

It’s important to be brave in life; to take charge and take steps to achieve your goals. In some odd way, I think this confidence and fearlessness led to the formation of Laughing Cats. Formed after lyricist Lauren Schiff contacted musician Tony Fredianelli, Laughing Cats is a spark of collaborative energy resulting in “an abundance of sonic material that clearly needed…to be released”. With their wealth of experience in the theatre and music industries, Schiff and Fredianelli drew together their natural creativity and skill to share raw emotion in laidback packages. Come with us as we delve into their debut single, ‘GYB’.

The first of several singles to be released, ‘GYB’ is one of the tracks off their upcoming debut album Funny Money. Laughing Cats’ influences are diverse, and their sound is as experimental leaning from power pop to indie-rock, but all with a nostalgic vintage sound taking us pre-2000. ‘GYB’ taps into a prominent slick of indie-pop, but with the bounciness of commercial pop lingering throughout. Interestingly, while a strong bubblegum pop tone exists, there is a shiver of rock laced in the track adding slight grit to the bouncy soundscape.

Recorded and produced by Laughing Cats, ‘GYB’ is as sophisticated and elegant as any track comes; yet, despite the maturity of its arrangement, youthful innocence breaks through with jovial optimism. Melodically the song is fun and exciting, but it is the lyricism and its execution that adds depth in a light-hearted tune. The band explain:

“’GYB’ was inspired by a friend’s romantic relationship. In real life, he “got her back”, but it’s going to be different for everyone. Maybe for others, the song will be an anthem for finally breaking away from a relationship that one partner is growing out of. We have all been there, for sure. Hopefully, the song helps someone stand on their own two feet and finally break out of any pattern. It’s all about celebrating one’s own power, and maybe even challenging another person to step up…”

In addition to the single, Laughing Cats released an official music video for ‘GYB’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
