Late TV – I Like To Hear That Bird Sing (2022)

I think Roadie Music described Late TV best when they noted that the band “…put everything in a blender and it exploded into a new sound that makes you wonder WOW, what was that?” Eclectic, obscure and unique, the UK-based quartet draw together influences from jazz, rock, soul, synth-pop and new wave in their melodies. Originally formed by Luke J Novak (vocals and guitar) and Richard Bowman (drums) in their hometown of Kidderminster, Late TV was already a blossoming duo act. Add the skills of jazz-obsessed Ryan Szanyi (bass) and Martin Coxall (keyboard), and you have a group who have played alongside Goldfrapp at Standon Calling Festival 2018, debuted on BBC Introducing and featured on international blogs. The latest addition to their discography is ‘I Like To Hear That Bird Sing’.

Following their single ‘A Girl Like You’, Late TV adopt a smooth, soothing sound with strong jazz and soul influences in ‘I Like To Hear That Bird Sing’. From the first second, you are sent off on a glistening sonic river within a hazy, wistful soundscape. Yet, while the synths and steady drums create a gentleness in the sonic mist, Late TV brings a surprise with guitar riffs bumping the sonic boat about. Reminiscent of new wave artists like The Police, the lads highlight the tumultuous waves in the river with rugged guitars before dropping down and leading you to the end with a smooth, flowing tone.

Lyrically, the band explain that it is an “emotional response to romantic frustrations drifting on a haze in the breezy style of soul yacht-rock ballad”. Interestingly enough, while the song is a sublime ride, the frustration and angst can be heard in the charming tune. Recorded by the band, mixed by Ed Longo and mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, ‘I Like To Hear That Bird Sing’ finds a delicate line between whimsical innocence and sophisticated authority in its melody.
