Last Funk – Let The Groove (2024)

While they have known each other for years, singer-songwriter Mark McWonder (guitar, bass and keyboard) and Antony White (keyboard) only began releasing music in 2021. Rising like a phoenix from the Covid-19 lockdowns, a very funky phoenix with disco boots and snazzy glitter-tinged feathers, Last Funk brings vintage funk to modern-day audiences. In fact, their funky tunes are not only retro but have a kaleidoscopic flair of house, hip-hop and rap flowing in soulful harmony. This is our introduction to Last Funk, so get your dancing shoes on and join us as we dive headfirst into their discography.

Following the well-received 2023 singles ‘Party Rap’ and ‘Step Right Back’, Last Funk strut into 2024 with the new single ‘Let The Groove’. Seemingly melding the rap stylings and strong house vibes of ‘Party Rap’ and ‘Step Right Back’, ‘Let The Groove’ begins as a tribute to 90s hip-hop tunes ala Snoop Dogg and Tupac; however, the melody kicks up with bold funk in the infectious chorus. Tossing a 70s-style funk into the mix bolstered by powerful female vocals merges the decades and then drags it up to 2024 with a contemporary edge.

For me, ‘Let The Groove’ is a kaleidoscopic swirl of styles almost indefinable as a real inimitable melting pot of sound. You think you have an idea of where the song falls genre-wise, then a wave of something else tips over your head leaving you bright and shining with a disco shimmer while rap beats cling to the sonic wrapper. Some songs are meant to be heard and others to be felt, ‘Let The Groove’ is the latter with its immediate rush of feel-good vibes and soul-stirring intoxication.

Everyone has bad days when things are just down in the dumps, and while some songs can ease the sadness, ‘Let The Groove’ brushes everything away with a cheeky grin. It is only two-and-a-half minutes in length, but it will leave you in a brilliant mood for hours.
