Larry Karpenko – The River (2025)
Delving into life and humanity, singer-songwriter Larry Karpenko focuses on love, spirituality, and the human connection. Rooted in Christian faith with a background in worship and praise, the US-based musician combines different modes of pop music with moving, intimate melodies – all while evoking raw emotion. The latest addition to his discography is the single, ‘The River’.
Following his well-received singles ‘Fare Thee Well’ and ‘Heart Calls Love’, ‘The River’ takes listeners through a kaleidoscopic concoction of folk and pop, but bound with a shift of classical music in its harmonic symphony. Recorded and produced at Kreation Studios – a space for collective collaboration of musical minds in Lorna Linda, California – ‘The River’ offers soothing, soft, gentle arrangements of piano, guitar, percussion, and hushed vocals. For me, Karpenko’s rich voice seems to lead the piano-driven track; however, it is the gospel-inspired choir that carries you off to a hopeful, bright, empowering end.
Taking a gander at Karpenko’s back catalogue, the singer-songwriter’ music is not just something to hear, but something to experience. As I mentioned, ‘The River’ takes listeners along a kaleidoscopic sonic river, but it is the joyful aura with star-studded vibrancy that ensnares senses.
Melodically, ‘The River’ is a shimmering river of sound with soul-stirring sensations; however, the lyrical theme enhances its profoundness with the gentle tones. Larry Karpenko explains:
“’The River’ is intimate and honest… The song’s topic is that of a most vulnerable desire in humans: a safe space for security and peace. As the song progresses, a spiritual dimension is revealed in the chorus… A second verse moves us where a metaphor is penned, comparing the river to God’s love flowing strong and steady. The third verse asks listeners to look for spaces where they find peace and reflection…”
