Lane Lines – Time & Space (2023)

The brainchild of US-based singer-songwriter Mandi L. Kimes, Lane Lines weaves hazy floods of pop music into dreamy synths with poignant themes bringing up the rear. A rising bedroom-pop star, Lane Lines is establishing itself as an intriguing artist garnering a following with each engaging live show. Yet, it is not only in the US that their fanbase is building. Featuring on the likes of PopFad, Obscure Sound, Clout, Illustrate Magazine, The Daily Listening and Lost In The Manor, Lane Lines is reaching far beyond their US borders.

Following their well-received track ‘Like To Look Sad’, ‘Time & Space’ is the second single from Lane Lines’ upcoming sophomore album, Lucid Dreaming. The album touches on Kimes’ experiences during the challenging Covid-19 pandemic. The latest single explores the dreaminess of that period being a reflective expression to connect pieces of the unconscious to their present consciousness.

“This song discusses what a majority of my lucid dreams are: an adventure that I go on with a dream person. Sometimes we go to familiar places like my old high school, an old job I worked at, or my grandparents’ farm. Other times, they’re taking me to a new destination that is unfamiliar to me. Either way, I never know what kind of experience I will have when my head hits the pillow and I allow my mind to take over.” – Kimes on ‘Time & Space’

More upbeat than ‘Like To Look Sad’, ‘Time & Space’ has a toe-tapping upbeat quality to the cinematic melody. Placing you in a hazy whirlpool of sound, you feel a sense of discomfort in the mad spinning but also a soul-stirring calmness. I immediately imagined a whirlpool of fog carrying characters around and around and around…just like a dreamlike anime scene. The thing is, just as you can lose your mind in the synth-inspired melody, you feel a strong sense of belonging.

Unafraid to touch on provocative topics, particularly surrounding issues of mental health, Lane Lines aims to resonate with those who feel completely isolated. Kimes explains, “I want folks to know they’re heard in their own individual struggles”. ‘Time & Space’ might discuss Kimes’ individual dreams, but its mesmerising melody and heartfelt lyricism connect with listeners on a deeper, hopeful level.
