La Palma – Sábado (2020)
La Palma covered us in richly textured melodies for their search for human resilience in ‘Infinite Bounce’. Now, the duo is looking at the surreal restlessness of the world through the lens of that space between being awake and asleep in ‘Sábado’. Written across a distance of 3000 miles, the single considers the events of the last year from social unrest to wildfires and the pandemic.
Using their layered sound, the duo has you yearning for the simple joys of a time gone by. They also fill you with that restless sense of reaching for someone in the middle of the night only to realise they are not there.
‘Sábado’ hits you with some groovy vibes from the first sound. The paced opening gets washed in waves of instrumentation creating the surreal vibes of the song. The textured melodies that the pair have become known for are on full display. The music has wonderful movements that are so organic that you can’t imagine them happening any other way. However, their flow does give you the feeling of not knowing if you are awake or asleep or somewhere in between. The sonic drift you are set on takes you from intimate and close sounds to expansive waves taking you out to a musical sea.
While the melody creates a collision of dreams and reality, Chris Walker’s vocals are a steady thread anchoring you. Through his stable performance, you are drawn further into the surreal soundscape. The chorus, in particular, has you floating in a space of restless easiness. The conflicting vibes of the vocals meld with the melody to further enhance the surrealism of the soundscape.
La Palma twirls you into a surreal soundscape and the moments between being awake and asleep in ‘Sábado’. The melody forms the surrealist landscape with intimate guitars and waves of expansive organs, percussion and synths. Walker’s vocals are a steady anchor as they lead you through the conflicting vibes of the track.
