La Need Machine – These Old Jeans (2024)
Quickly establishing themselves as one of the more intriguing, interesting and exciting indie bands in Seattle, US-based group La Need Machine demands attention with their music. I’m not saying they demand attention by grabbing you and forcing you to listen to them; no, their music is a soothing draw making you listen to the hard-hitting forcefulness of your own accord. Refusing to be defined by genre-specific labels, La Need Machine delicately saunter through indie-rock, punk, country, Americana, indie-pop and rock ‘n’ roll with a cheeky smile and secret wink. Wink back with us as we delve into their single ‘These Old Jeans’.
A follow-on from their single ‘I Wish I Could Fly’, a song about the provocative and devastating effects of climate change, ‘These Old Jeans’ acknowledges the significance of wisdom. Paying attention to provocative issues, La Need Machine appreciate the frustration, despair, and desperate need for understanding; as well as identifying how knowledge earned from these challenges can create a better existence for everyone. The band explains:
“’These Old Jeans’ is the story of a person acquiring wisdom. As the person gains more and more wisdom, the more they realise how much wisdom there is to learn. This naturally leads the person to consider that their own opinions may be wrong and that others’ opinions may be correct. The result of this growth creates space for a real understanding with others, and this real understanding is a step toward peace, love and understanding for all.”
Similar to ‘I Wish I Could Fly’, the twang of country music exists clinging to ‘These Old Jeans’; however, greater indie-rock tones slither through bluegrass meets classic rock with Americana flair. Interestingly, while all the genres can be delicately pin-pointed, the melody is overall a harmonic fusion of everything (plus stuff we probably can’t recognise). Immersive with a rush of pure unadulterated sound, La Need Machine makes you feel the music instead of just listening to it; a way of being lost in sounds instead of defining the style. A symphony of bold drums, stirring guitars, an interspersed haunting fiddle, and soothing vocals, ‘These Old Jeans’ is uplifting, sobering and blissful.
