La Need Machine – The Mountain (2024)
Traversing various styles and types of music, the US-based rock group La Need Machine push the boundaries of conventionalism with their eclectic sound. From indie-rock and folk to indie-pop, blues and Americana, La Need Machine bring an enigmatic flair to the Seattle rock scene. The band reached our ears at the end of 2023 with their country-tinged single ‘I Wish I Could Fly’, and we were hooked. From 2024’s ‘These Old Jeans’ to ‘Maria’ and ‘Herculean Tasks’, La Need Machine turns heads on an international scale, and that includes our heads. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Mountain’.
Following the critically acclaimed ‘Herculean Tasks’, La Need Machine shifts from a heavier rock-infused sound to something softer and more soothing in ‘The Machine’. Alright, the concoction of music leans toward a rock tone; however, there is a harmonic charm lingering through the hard-hitting melody. Produced with Bear Davis, ‘The Machine’ combines crashing drums, soaring guitars and a bold bass bound with an interplay of female and male vocals. For me, however, it is the inclusion of interspersed piano and strings that push a haunting sincerity in the track.
With a sophisticated production, ‘The Mountain’ seems to have three levels: the underbelly a rock-tinged band, the mid-section a shift of piano and strings, and the top raw acoustic vocals. Mature and masterful beneath but with a vulnerable exploration of life coating the song, La Need Machine use intricate arrangements to share complex themes. The band explain:
“’The Mountain’s message is the eternal and universal proverb that to give is to be received. As the world becomes increasingly divided into the “haves” and “have-nots”, this concept is more important than ever… it’s essential to remember that this means not just financial giving, but giving of yourself, your talents, your work, and your love. It’s more meaningful and difficult for a rich man to give his manual labour than his money… In addition to being a moral lesson, the concept that it’s better to give than to receive is actually good for all of us. A large quantity of scientific research shows that generosity has a wide range of benefits – neurological, psychological and evolutionary…”
