La Need Machine – I Wish I Could Fly (2023)

Travelling through the realms of indie-pop, indie-rock, punk, rock ‘n’ roll and country, La Need Machine certainly has a unique sound about them. Diverse and constantly evolving, the US-based band pushes boundaries and refuses to be pigeonholed. A fast-rising act, the group is quickly garnering a following both on and off the ground – confident stage presence makes them unforgettable and streaming singles make them insatiable. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘I Wish I Could Fly’.

A “people-oriented” group, La Need Machine is a firm supporter of various charities using their music and videos to enforce the need for community awareness in provocative areas. Supporting charities like The Trevor Project, National Alliance on Mental Health, American Nurses Foundation, Mary’s Place Emergency Family Shelters, Doctors Without Borders and the Ukraine Response Fund (to name but a few), La Need Machine push the message of awareness, acknowledgement and need for change. In ‘I Wish I Could Fly’, the group lean toward the issue of climate change.

“’I Wish I Could Fly’ is about the impacts of climate change on wildlife as they lose habitat to fire, change in flora and fauna food chains, declining biological diversity, and melting snow and ice. ‘I Wish I Could Fly’ follows the story of a black bear that is happy with his place in the forest until wildfires force him and his fellow animals to leave.” – La Need Machine on ‘I Wish I Could Fly’

Following their collaborative single with sebastian, ‘Maria’, La Need Machine shift from an indie-pop-inspired tone to a country tone with ‘I Wish I Could Fly’. Despite the provocative theme, the single is laidback, toe-tapping and filled with rich warmth – almost like reading a child’s storybook out loud. Al’s charming vocals explore Black Bear’s desire to fly away from the wildfire-filled habitat; however, a profoundness lurks within the seemingly carefree melody. It is this thought-provoking content delivered in a jovial way that impacts listeners on an intimate level.

Lost and afraid, we hear about Black Bear wanting to leave. The thing is, just as the desperate fragility slithers through, a sense of hopefulness and empowerment approaches in Black Bear’s wanting to help others out of the fiery habitat; save them and let life flourish. I hope this warming lyricism promotes community support and the “let’s do the better thing like Black Bear” factor in ‘I Wish I Could Fly’.
