Kyral – The Tide (2024)
Running at a million miles per hour, and taking audiences with them, Ireland-based group Kyral screams along with a pop-punk attitude and rock music core. Born during the depths of the Covid-19 lockdown, Tara Behan (guitar) took time to explore unique blends of vintage emo rock. Enlisting her long-time friend Alex Webb (vocals), the pair sparked something special. Wanting to enhance and expand their sound, Webb and Behan turned to social media and recruited Tom Ambrose (bass) and Jack Lennon (drums). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Tide’.
This is our introduction to Kyral, but listening to their singles felt comfortable and nostalgic instead of new and weird. Following the well-received songs ‘The Point’ and ‘Asphyxia’, the group tackle one of the most complex areas of life: love, loss and relationships. Using a personal narrative, Webb captures the confusion, despair, frustration and tumultuous emotions of broken connections. With powerful vocals and poetic lyrics, ‘The Tide’ delves into “the challenges of grieving the end of relationships and friendships, and the process of coming to terms with life without important people.”
Lyrically, ‘The Tide’ is an ode to the painful tragedy of ended relationships with its bittersweet tint; however, just as Webb’s vocals clutch at your heart with each word, it is the melody and her tone that carries your soul. Pounding drums match soaring guitars with a bold bass pulsating beneath, ‘The Tide’ leans strongly toward hard rock with a near melodic metal glean. Interestingly, the combination of instruments is a harmonic union but each beam with individuality and prominence throughout the track.
Powerful, confident and forceful, Kyral tosses you against the rocks with a tumultuous tide washing over you… almost an overwhelming drowning. The thing is, just as the song is chaotic ferocity, sincere tenderness lurks within.
