Kyle Boswell – The Way It’s Always Been (2024)
Bringing the sounds of 2000s rock to 2024 with a modern-day indie-pop twist, singer-songwriter Kyle Boswell captures the essence of the 21st century with his unique musical style. From Kasabian to Alex Turner, Boswell’s songs are bold and powerful but with a reflective poeticism slithering through the sound. Using his dynamic vocals atop the personal narratives, the UK-based artist is a charming storyteller bringing comfort and solace through his infectious music. Following his well-received single ‘When You Met The Protagonist’, ‘The Way It’s Always Been’ is Boswell’s second release of 2024. ‘When You Met The Protagonist’ had a seemingly gruff grittiness to the tune, and ‘The Way It’s Always Been’ steps away from this entirely. The lingering lilt of indie-rock is evident bringing a heavier Kasabian vibe. Then again, a shimmering layer of indie-pop rushes across in its rhythmic guitar harmonically joining with laidback keys and drums.
Produced alongside Ross Tidmus, Boswell’s new single is optimistic and empowering with hits of tenderness interwoven through the tune. Not only does the instrumentation prompt feelings of heartfelt vulnerability but its wave of softness above the dark delves into the more profound areas of life. Moreover, the glimpse of modern-day indie-pop swirling in vintage indie-rock (with a bit of folk clinging to the edges), ‘The Way It’s Always Been’ is a wink at…well, the way things have always been and tend to remain.
Smooth and warm, ‘The Way It’s Always Been’ has a vibrant tune; however, at least for me, it is Boswell’s rich vocals that enhance the calm gentleness of the song. A sucker for accents, I find Boswell’s unique English inflexion ups the ante of the melody. Not London-y or Manchester-y, the vocals are obscure and present in all his music adding uniqueness to an already unique musician’s sound.
