Kurt Gott – I Miss The Nightlife (2023)

In an interview with The Other Side Reviews (that’s us!), singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kurt Gott shared that we should “…never give up on your dreams. It’s never too late to make a change and life is too short to not at least give it a try…” – and he shows us this passion to make a change in his music. After quitting his long-standing job in television operations, Kurt Gott embraced a career as a full-time musician at age 50. Now at age 52, the US-based artist has several critically acclaimed and award-winning releases to his name. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘I Miss The Nightlife’.

Following his well-received EP Last Call (released in 2021), ‘I Miss The Nightlife’ adopts a smoother, more soothing and mellifluous country-inspired sound. Similar to the previous track ‘Christine’, there is a softer quality to ‘I Miss The Nightlife’ offering a charming, heartfelt and tender sensation. While country is the predominant style, slivers of folk rock and Americana slither through the melody. A nostalgic breath flutters in ‘I Miss The Nightlife’ with comparisons to Tom Petty, The Bellamy Brothers and Crosby, Stills and Nash whispering in my ears.

Just as the melody is a toe-tapping tune with smile-inducing blues sensibilities, it is far more than a fun, upbeat track. Clinging to the theme of nostalgia, ‘I Miss The Nightlife’ is a reflective single looking at those cherished memories of youthful recklessness. Kurt Gott explains that “the song is about reflecting back on our younger days and reminiscing about the great times we shared together going out on the town, partying and coming home late at night. In particular, this is about spending those nights with my girlfriend who eventually became my wife…”

Performing the majority of instruments from acoustic guitar to piano and singing vocals, Kurt Gott proves his natural talent for music in ‘I Miss The Nightlife’. Yet, while we indulge in his multi-instrumental skills, this single was created in collaboration with musicians Cary Scope (bass guitar and drums) and Rob Blaney (banjo and Hammond organ) – each contributing to the well-layered musical masterpiece that is ‘I Miss The Nightlife’.
