Ku-Ma – Exposition (2021)

Ku-Ma has combined his powerful synth mastery with premade vocal samples to create ‘Exposition’. A combination that you don’t get too often, it comes together for a nostalgic look back on a past relationship. Adding a touch of the 80s, he retrospectively considers patterns of behaviour that lead to an inevitable end of a relationship. While introspective and nostalgic, there is a blast of modern energy woven through the synths that makes it an absolute blast to listen to.

As a relative newcomer to the scene, he started making music from his couch after the pandemic hit. Using vocal samples, he weaves a tapestry of sound around them to craft music that brings his unique touch to your ears. A true connoisseur of vocal samples, he waited for the right one to come around before swirling his synths to create this single.

‘Exposition’ tumbles into life with a feeling of awakening. The build-up of the synths is delicate and brings a kaleidoscope of glittering colours to your mind. The deep beats that enter under them bring texture and contrast. There is a touch of disco to the movement of the synths that fill your brain with glitter balls. It is an interesting textured melody with layers of synths coming together then diverging as they venture on their own path.

This movement to the music helps to elevate the reflective feeling of the track. The vocal sample brings a smooth vocal performance to the track. Through the pre-made vocals, you are thrown into the contemplations of a relationship and the behaviour that led to it ending. Ku-Ma has picked up the emotions of the vocals and flooded them into the synths. It is an outstanding combination of an excellent vocal sample and his musical ability. As you ride a reflective vibe through the majority of the track, you rise out of it with the burst of energy at the end of the track. This makes it feel like the reflection on what went wrong has led to a moment of enlightenment that lets you move forward with positivity.

Ku-Ma rises with a glitterball of synths to reflect on a past relationship in ‘Exposition’ before throwing you into the energy of moving on. Using pre-made vocal samples can be a risk, but he has masterfully wrapped his unique melodics around them. The synths have you floating on a reflective vibe before rising up on enlightenment and positive energy.
